What happens during a reiki treatment?
Arrival and Preparation
When you arrive for your Reiki session, you will typically be welcomed by the practitioner and may have a brief discussion about your health and any specific issues you’d like to address. This helps the practitioner understand your needs and tailor the session accordingly.
Setting the Environment
You will be led to a serene, quiet space designed to promote relaxation. Soft music, dim lighting, and perhaps some calming scents from essential oils might be used to create a soothing atmosphere.
Starting the Session
You will lie down fully clothed on a comfortable massage table. It’s important to find a position that feels restful, usually on your back, but you can also lie on your stomach or side if preferred.

The Treatment
- Initial Assessment: Some practitioners begin by lightly scanning your body with their hands, feeling for areas of energy imbalance.
- Hand Positions: The practitioner will place their hands lightly on or just above specific areas of your body. Common positions include the head, shoulders, stomach, and feet. Each position is usually held for several minutes.
- Energy Flow: As the practitioner’s hands rest on or hover above your body, you might feel sensations such as warmth, tingling, or a gentle pulsating. This is the flow of Reiki energy working to balance and heal.
- Relaxation: Many people enter a deeply relaxed state, sometimes even falling asleep. The session is typically very gentle, with no physical manipulation involved.
Duration
A Reiki session usually lasts between 60 to 90 minutes, depending on your needs and the practitioner’s approach.
Closing the Session
Once the session is complete, the practitioner will gently bring you back to full awareness. You may take a few moments to sit up and gather yourself before discussing any sensations or experiences you had during the treatment.
Post-Treatment
After the session, you might feel relaxed, refreshed, and more balanced. It’s recommended to drink plenty of water, rest, and pay attention to your body’s needs. Some people experience emotional releases or insights, and it’s good to be gentle with yourself as you integrate the healing.
